NBC 5 (KXAS) and Telemundo 39 (KXTX) comprise the largest local news organization, serving more than 8 million viewers in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, which spans 32 counties in North Texas. The station is committed to serving the community by empowering viewers through knowledge, while remaining a calming voice in crisis situations.

NBC 5 is home to the largest team of local broadcast meteorologists certified “most accurate” by WeatheRate. Along with the powerful S-Band Radar, the NBC 5 Weather Experts' use Texas Thunder Truck and Texas Lightning Truck to take viewers closer to storms to provide life-saving information in real-time and Texas Sky Ranger is equipped with Ranger Vision.

The station’s multi-award-winning investigative unit, NBC 5 Investigates, has provided meaningful in-depth reporting by exposing the truth through evidence-based reporting and holding the powerful accountable in North Texas and beyond for the past decade.

The NBC 5 Responds team answers local consumer inquiries and works to get solutions and resolutions – to date, the consumer unit has returned more than $6 million to North Texans.

HISTORY OF NBC 5

NBC 5 was founded in September 1948 as WBAP-TV, Texas’s first television station. In 2023, we celebrated 75 years of local broadcasting.

Amon G. Carter, Sr., the founder of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and WBAP Radio, turned his sights to television and applied with the FCC for a construction permit for WBAP-TV, the first station south of St. Louis, east of Los Angeles and west of Richmond, Va.

The station signed on the air two days early in September 1948 to bring President Harry S. Truman's visit to Fort Worth to TV viewers.

From that day on, WBAP-TV established a pattern of history firsts in broadcasting. Here are a few of those firsts:

• Southwest's first professional weather reporting program, Weather Telefacts with Harold Taft.
• First Texas television station to broadcast a live studio color telecast with RCA equipment.
• First color tape recorder in Texas.
• First local TV news magazine. 'Texas '70s' was a monthly 30-minute show covering the entire state.
• First live intercontinental satellite report from London to Dallas-Fort Worth.
• First Texas TV station to institute stereo casting.
• First Texas TV station to offer closed-captioned newscasts.
• First TV station in the U.S. to provide a Local Weather Station with 24-hour local updates.
• First Texas TV station to offer full online computer access.
• First TV station in the Southwest to offer email news delivery.
• First local station to transition from analog to High Definition.
• First S-Band radar owned and operated by a television station in Texas, and only the third in the U.S.

WBAP-TV became KXAS-TV in 1974 when the television station was purchased by LIN Broadcasting. The "XAS" in the call letter came from Texas. Solidifying the TV station's long-term relationship with NBC, Channel 5 became an owned-and-operated station in the spring of 1998, which came with a name change to NBC 5.

NBC 5 through the years

In late 2013, NBC 5 moved from its home on Broadcast Hill in Fort Worth to a 75,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Fort Worth's CentrePort Business Park. The address of the Studios at DFW — 4805 Amon Carter Blvd. — is a nod to the station's history; it captures the year the station went on the air and the channel number. It's only appropriate that it's on the street named for the man who started it all.

The same year it moved, NBC 5 donated three decades of historical news footage and records to the University of North Texas. The NBC 5 film library appears in The Portal to Texas History. In 2025, UNT reported that content in the KXAS-NBC 5 News Collection had been viewed 8 million times.

The stations proudly support non-profit organizations that address important issues and make a positive, local impact.  We help North Texans live healthy lifestyles, celebrate culture, rally for education, improve food security and much more. We support numerous programs that help our neighbors thrive and build a stronger future for themselves.

We’re very proud of our signature initiatives such as Fighting Hunger, which addresses food insecurity, Reading With You, a program designed to make education fun while addressing literacy among the youngest North Texans. The NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants awards $2.5 million to local nonprofit organizations across the country and Clear the Shelters, the compassionate animal adoption and donation drive that consistently helps find "forever homes" for thousands of local furry friends each year.

NBC 5 Community Impact's monthly program, '5 Talk Street', features local organizations, nonprofits and events in North Texas that promote community involvement and make contributions to the community where we live.

Texas Today

The Studios at DFW is home to the Emmy award-winning local lifestyle show Texas Today. The show, which airs at 11:30 a.m. on weekdays, helps North Texans discover the latest in food, fitness, fashion, parenting, beauty and entertainment.

Hosts Cleo Greene and Adriana López don't just talk about the people, places and passions Texans love, they experience them.
