Phil Prazan

Phil Prazan is an award-winning reporter who focuses on policy, politics, and government. He is the co-anchor of Lone Star Politics, Sundays at 8:30 a.m. on NBC 5.

Prazan joined NBC 5 in July 2023, after spending three years at NBC 6 in Miami as an investigative reporter. Prior to WTVJ-TV, he spent five years as a political and investigative reporter at KXAN-TV in Austin, Texas. While covering the Texas Capitol, he was on an Edward R. Murrow Award-winning team covering mental health in public schools, an Emmy Award-winning team covering natural disasters, and an Emmy-nominated team investigating Texas higher education. Before that, he worked as a general assignment reporter in Des Moines, Iowa.

Prazan began his career as a researcher for Tom Jennings Productions, now known as 1895 Films, a documentary production company in Venice Beach, California. Much of his work focused on MLK: The Assassination Tapes, a documentary that aired on the Smithsonian Channel. In 2013, the documentary won a George Foster Peabody Award and was nominated for a national Emmy.

His broadcast career has also earned him recognition from organizations like the Iowa Broadcast News Association, the Texas Associated Press, and the Association for Professional Educators.
While in Texas, he has planned, organized, and moderated local debates and statewide forums. He also serves on the Texas Secretary of State’s Advisory Board for
Elections.

Prazan grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and received his degree in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas at Austin. Prazan also holds a Master's degree in History from Florida Atlantic University, winning the best thesis in his graduating class titled "Making and Breaking the Governor: How the Strong Governor Survived Reconstruction in Florida but not in Texas."

He is an avid reader, loves being active, and enjoys exploring new places. He is passionate about the human drama: what people do, why they do it, and how it impacts the rest of us. He recognizes he’s one of the few people lucky enough to live their passion professionally.
