Errors Led to Dallas Firefighter's Death: Reports Obtained by NBC 5

A combination of deficiencies contributed the death of Dallas Firefighter Stanley Wilson last year according to reports from the State Fire Marshal and Dallas Fire Rescue obtained Thursday by NBC 5.

Wilson, 51, was a father and husband. He'd been a Dallas Firefighter for 28 years.

The reports were provided to Wilson's widow Jenny and her attorney Barry Hasten Wednesday after months of requests for results of investigations about the fire at the Hearthwood Condominiums.

Hasten said Jenny Wilson is not planning a lawsuit over her husband's death at this time but she has been disappointed about the amount of time it has taken to get answers.

Reports from the State Fire Marshal and Dallas Fire-Rescue obtained Thursday by NBC 5 show errors led to Dallas firefighter Stanley Wilson’s death in 2013.

Both reports cite shortcomings in risk assessment, communications, supervision, firefighting tactics and training.

Wilson and other firefighters from his Station 53 arrived at the 6 alarm fire long after it started on May 20, 2013.

The reports say Station 53 firefighters were asked to conduct an interior search of a first floor area that had already been searched earlier. The floors above Wilson collapsed while he was in the first floor area.

Witnesses in the reports indicate a Deputy Chief gave the order to enter that area but that chief denies it.

Stanley Wilson, 51, who had been a Dallas firefighter for 28 years, died after being trapped while battling a six-alarm blaze at a condominium complex.

"There was absolutely no reason to go in and absolutely there's some fault here," Hasten said. "But Jenny's No. 1 concern is the remainder of the firefighters out there on the force because if fires are fought this way, we're going to loose more firefighters."

The city report they were given is 111 pages long and the state report is 54 pages. The reports can be seen at the bottom of the page.

Hasten said sources have told him a much longer, 789 page city report has been prepared.

"And I don’t feel getting a report that is missing 688 pages is being transparent. There's a reason that was not given and I'm going to find out why," Hasten said.

Lt. Joel Lavender said Dallas Fire Rescue has no comment about the reports at this time but a press conference is planned for Friday.
