Several holiday favorites including Enchant Christmas at Arlington’s Globe Life Park opted to stay closed for the night ahead of strong winds expected throughout DFW.

Several North Texas events are shutting down Thursday in anticipation of a winter storm that will push through the area this afternoon and evening, bringing with it wind gusts to 50 mph and a chance for snow.

Some residents in Arlington’s Interlochen neighborhood put finishing touches on their holiday decorations.

The neighborhood’s popular 43rd annual holiday drive-thru light show officially begins Friday.

Thursday would ordinarily be a soft-opening with vehicles making their way through the neighborhood where most homes are decorated for the holidays.

“If the weather is bad we won’t get so much traffic and if the weather is really bad most of us will protect our most valuable and irreplaceable displays by saving them until tomorrow,” said Ralph Sobel, president of the homeowners’ association.

Winds with gusts of 50 miles an hour or more will surely put resident James Caldwell’s Santa and Rudolph roof decorations to the test.

“He’s weighted down and he’s tied down,” said Caldwell. “Even if there’s a heavy wind he’ll just lay down until the wind goes away, I think. I may find that that’s wrong but we’ll see.”

Back in Grand Prairie, the sound of the holidays was nearly drowned out by the whipping winds Thursday evening.

Prairie Lights also opted to stay closed to the public for the day.

“We’re not concerned about anything falling down, it’s pretty secure,” said Chris Chastain, operations supervisor for the city’s parks department. “But we don’t take any risks when it comes to our customers.”

Crews spent the day checking light displays, holiday tents and will watch for any falling trees around Lynn Creek Park.

Park rangers will be monitoring the situation Thursday evening.

Representatives with both Enchant Christmas and Prairie Lights say they will re-open for business on Friday.
