Dump the Pump: Free Transit Rides for a Week

Dump the Pump week runs from June 18 through June 23

There’s a new push for North Texas drivers to dump the pump and ride public transportation for free.  It includes DART, The “T”, and the Denton County Transportation Authority.

Drivers looking for a little relief from the gas pump can exchange a gas receipt for a free, weekly, regional pass to ride the transit system.  The pass is good for the week of June 18.

The transit agencies want new riders to give the service a try and compare it to the cost of commuting in a car.

An unlimited, daily DART regional pass costs $10.  A new AAA study shows that riding the transit network, could save a driver more than $9,000 per year.

Driver Mike Johnson believes it’s a great deal.  “I ride it for recreation," Johnson said.  "I will ride it to the convention center, instead of paying to park, ride it from the airport, instead of paying to park."

Other drivers say even with the free week, it just doesn’t fit into their daily routine.

Denise Johnson said the transportation doesn’t come close enough to her house for her to use.  “I think gas is ridiculous, but what can you do?  If you don’t have DART to use,” Johnson said.
