Ring in the next New Year with some NHL action. The Flyers will take on the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park Jan. 1, 2010, in the NHL Winter Classic, the Daily Times’ Anthony J. SanFilippo confirmed.

And yes, we said Fenway Park. The baseball stadium will get a whole new look for the Winter Classic, transforming into an outdoor rink.

The NHL initially wanted the Washington Capitals to face the Bruins to highlight Hart Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin. But NBC, the network broadcasting the game, wanted the Flyers to attract a better television audience, according to the paper.

The NHL gave in (great news for Flyers fans), hoping the Capitals could play Rangers at Yankee Stadium in 2011.

The first NHL Winter Classic was played on Jan. 1, 2008, between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York.
