Garland Firefighters Rescue, Resuscitate 5-Year-Old Girl

Firefighters resuscitated a 5-year-old girl after a fire in Garland Wednesday morning.

Garland Fire Department spokesman Joe Harn said firefighters responded to a house fire 3700 block of Knight Lane at about 5:45 a.m.

"They were met by a grandmother in the front yard who stated her granddaughter was still in the back bedroom," Garland Fire Department Assistant Chief Carl Coan said.

Balanciere said the grandmother used a brick to shatter the window in an effort to reach her granddaughter.

“She tried to go down the hallway where her granddaughter was but couldn’t because the heat and smoke forced her outside,” Balanciere said. “She went around outside to her bedroom window and she said she threw a brick through the window.”

A firefighter crawled through the girl's window to rescue her from the house.

“You have a firefighter who is five foot eight getting through a window that's six foot off the ground," he said. "So, it took some effort."

The girl was not breathing when she was removed from the house. Firefighters immediately performed CPR.

The girl was taken to a local hospital where she was stabilized, before being transferred to Parkland Memorial Hospital as a precaution, Balanciere said.

Her family told NBC 5 she is expected to make a full recovery.

"We are waiting to see her, so we can give her hugs and kisses," neighbor Jennifer Sherrod said.

Firefighters are still investigating a cause.
