Councilman Promises More Enforcement on Abrams Road in Dallas

Families in the Lakewood area of Dallas, concerned about multiple vehicle crashes in their neighborhood, may soon see more police enforcement.

In an email to Susan Moore, who lives next to Abrams Road, Councilman Mark Clayton said the city would be increasing enforcement. This weekend, police parked a marked patrol car next to Abrams at Lakeshore Drive as a warning to drivers to slow down.

Moore first spoke to NBC 5 last week after a string of wrecks on Abrams Road between Lakewood Boulevard and Monticello Avenue that included a fatality.

Officers have responded to several accidents off of Vickery Boulevard, Velasco Avenue and Vanderbilt Avenue. Earlier this month, emergency crews rushed to the scene of a crash near Abrams Road and Vanderbilt Avenue where a man was hit and killed while heading home.

In 2013, Moore’s home was damaged when a vehicle plowed into her laundry room. In September, another crash sent a car through her lawn, missing her home by a few inches.

“Your adrenaline just goes and kicks in and starts helping you get through it. And then afterwards when everything calms down you wonder, oh my gosh, what just happened,” said Moore. “Is it going to happen again and what can we do to protect ourselves?”

Sunday morning, Moore received an email from Clayton, saying additional police enforcement is beginning this weekend. He also said a possible solution may have to include adding more traffic lights in the district, if voters approve a proposed bond package in the upcoming November election.

According to residents, speed is not the only factor. The road is narrow, there are a lot of hills and the intersections are staggered.

A City of Dallas official said the city is currently conducting a traffic and speed study on Abrams. The study should be complete in less than two weeks.
