The debate over the Washington Redskins’ nickname is still simmering along, and according to one veteran writer, a change may be coming sooner rather than later.
In Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column on Sports Illustrated, fittingly published on Monday, King says, “I think the Washington franchise will have a new team name by 2016.”
A lot of folks have made similar predictions, but this one stands out because King actually gives the change a timetable--something no one else has really done.
Last month, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called on the Redskins to change their name, saying it is “obviously” the right thing to do, and he isn’t the only politician to weigh in on the issue. Senator Harry Reid has also been an outspoken critic of the name, while President Barack Obama was more noncommittal, simply asking the league to look into the matter.
