Jerry Jones was on the radio yesterday, because being on the radio is the sort of thing that he enjoys; and while there, in his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan, he defended a struggling player--because, again, that’s the sort of thing Jones enjoys (see: David Buehler).
Specifially, Jones was asked if tight end Martellus Bennett’s next big mistake would be his last as a member of the Dallas Cowboys.
"Well no, it's not. We need him," Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. "He's doing an outstanding job in parts of what we're going to need as we go along."
Bennett, in the final season of his rookie contract, has five catches for 41 yards and no touchdowns on the year. He also has three drops, one of which bounced off his hands and into a waiting defender’s for an interception last week against the Eagles.
"Martellus certainly has the ability to be an outstanding receiver, but more importantly, he is a tremendous blocker," Jones said. "Martellus Bennett could be a tackle. He has real strong hands, long arms, has natural feet, the ability to reset and do all the things you want in a blocker. So we benefit from his work in there.
"No one wants to catch the ball more than he does. The good news is he can catch it and he can go high and catch it, which is a big item. He's got a 41-inch vertical and he has long arms and if the ball is right, he should be an effective weapon. You combine that with his blocking, as we look ahead, I'm glad we've got him as we move on to where we're trying to get to as the season goes along."
