Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden never had any delusion that he was brought to Dallas for any other reason than to serve as the backup for Tony Romo. But after entering each of his two seasons as the starter in Cleveland, opening a season as the No. 2 is a new thing for the Oklahoma State product.
"It's a different mindset, but I think you have to go about it the same way," Weeden said, per ESPN Dallas. "You have to be prepared every snap because playing this position, you just never know. Whether it's for a play here, a play there, you just never know. You've just got to be ready.
"You've got to prepare as if you're going to play. You can't take nights off and not study at night and not do the things you normally do if you were the starter. I think you've got to prepare the same way and when your number is called, go in there and make the best of it."
The hope, of course, is that Weeden won’t need to play a meaningful snap all year. But at 34, Romo is coming off December back surgery, meaning the team’s backup option could very well come into play at some point.
