Spieth Joins Day, Mcllroy at the Memorial

The top three golfers in the world will be teeing off at the Memorial Tournament this week in Dublin, Ohio. Two of those three will start out grouped together for the first two rounds.

Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Rory Mcllroy are all going into the tournament with wins. Spieth and Mcllroy will be grouped together, along with Justin Thomas, for Thursday’s opening round at Muirfield.

Day will be joined by defending champ David Lingmerth and Jim Furyk.

Spieth will tee off around 8:26 a.m. on No. 10, coming off his win this past weekend at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational in Fort Worth.

Mcllroy won two weeks ago at the Irish Open. Day, the world’s number one ranked golfer, took a couple of weeks off to recharge after his wire-to-wire win at The Players.

As for Spieth, the world’s No. 2, he’s appeared to put that final round collapse at the Masters behind him and is now trying to catch Day for the top spot. Spieth finished tied for third last year at the Memorial.

“There’s always certainly the goal to try to be number one in the world, that’s just a fantastic title to own,” said Spieth after his win on Sunday. “For me, it’s big to take a big step and a small chunk into Jason’s lead right now.”

First round coverage of the 2016 PGA Memorial Tournament starts Thursday at 2:30 p.m. on The Golf Channel.

* Other notes: SMU alum Bryson DeChambeau will tee off at 7:59 a.m. on Thursday. He’s played in two PGA events this season, making the cut both times.
