Old Glory Rounds Flower Mound in Veterans Day Relay

It’s the most patriotic run of the year for residents of Flower Mound.

On Wednesday, the town held its second annual Veterans Day Relay using a very fitting baton: Old Glory.

Runners handed off an American Flag as they each took about a two mile run through different parts of town.

Their route covered about 54 miles after two passes and took the entire day as participants tried to make sure everyone in town got a look at the flag to remember the meaning behind the holiday.

The flag also passed in front of every public school in Flower Mound where, at many of them, students lined the sidewalks to cheer on the runners and salute the flag.

Many participants were local veterans who said it was an honor to carry the flag on the holiday.

One of the more unique entrants was 78-year-old resident Harold Reed, a Navy veteran who stood easily with the younger runners and completed two miles.

Flower Mound town leaders first created the event last year after the mayor saw a resident running with the flag on special occasions following 9/11 and decided to try the relay as a Veterans Day addition.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Denton County Veterans Coalition.
