Thieves Steal State Fair Prize-Winning Quilts

They took more than a year to create.

Now, two State Fair award-winning quilts are missing.

The quilts were stolen over the weekend from a building at Fair Park.

They were created by 12-year-old Marisol Mercado and her sister, 13-year-old Marisela.

They’ve been learning to sew for the past four years.

“It relaxes me,” said Marisela.

They’ve spent the past year-and-a-half sewing the quilts that were entered into a creative arts competition at the State Fair of Texas.

“They were masterpieces. They were just beautiful,” said their aunt, Robin Donahue, who taught them the craft.

The quilts placed second and third in the competition.

After all that, photos are all they have left of their prize-winning patchwork.

“I got really upset when I found out,” said Marisela.

“I was upset and mad at the same time,” said Marisol.

You won’t find a stitch of that anymore.

“I really wouldn't be mad at them because I would know why they did it is because what's going on in their life is rough,” said Marisela.

They are skills some never learn in a lifetime: How to sew, how to finish what you start, and how to forgive.

“Just gonna pray and hope that we get them back,” said Marisela.

Dallas police are investigating.

The Mercado family is offering a one thousand dollar reward for the quilts' return.
