Some Repairs at Flooded School Could Take Weeks

Classes at Grapevine High to resume Wednesday

School officials canceled Tuesday's classes at Grapevine High School because of continuing repairs of a ruptured water main.

A large water main burst under the school Sunday, causing "significant flooding" in the library, lecture hall, band and choir rooms and two gymnasiums, said the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District. More than a fourth of the building flooded, school officials said.

"The water pressure actually forced the slab upward and water up through little hairline cracks that you'll see in any cement slab," Principal Jerry Hollingsworth said.

School was closed Monday so repairs could be done. Monday afternoon, officials said the school would also be closed on Tuesday and would reopen Wednesday.

Crews tore out waterlogged gym floors and ripped down paneling to see how much water got inside the walls.

Evening activities at Grapevine High School's main campus were also canceled Monday, including the Contemporary Band Concert and the eighth-grade Parent Night.

However, Monday's soccer games at Mustang-Panther Stadium were still held. Students at the game said they were wondering what the building looked like.

"I heard it's really bad, like serious," student Kalie Hagood said.

Taylor Haynes, another student, said the damage looked "pretty bad" in a picture she saw.

"You couldn't even see the carpet on the ground," she said.

Power was cut to parts of the building, and the water supply was turned off. The district asked students and staff members to stay out of the building until further notice.

Hollingsworth said school officials will do everything they can to get students back in class.

"We have excellent insurance that will cover this," he said.

School officials said classes will resume Wednesday. But repairs to some of the floors and walls could take weeks to complete, so some areas of the building will remain off-limits.
