Hospitalized Officer Finally Coming Back to Dallas

A Dallas police officer who was hospitalized during an out-of-state Police Explorers competition is finally heading back to Dallas.

Officer Alex Garcia was sent to a Colorado hospital July 8 after he became severely dehydrated and suffered brain hemorrhaging during training.

His insurance company refused to pay for a medical flight to transport Garcia to a Dallas hospital.

"Alex is in a unique situation where he’s stuck in another state. We’re trying to get him back home," said Frederick Frasier, chairman of the Assist the Officer Foundation.

The Assist the Officer Foundation, an organization that helps Dallas police officers who are injured in the line of duty, was hoping to raise enough funds to pay for an airbus.

But a surprise phone call on Saturday morning changed everything.

"We were fortunate enough to have a private donor this morning call in and donate money for the airbus," Frasier said.

The foundation will offer financial help to Garcia during his recovery once he returns to Dallas.

He could be back in North Texas as early as Monday.
