500 Foot Tall ‘Texas Odyssey' Planned to Go Up in Dallas

Observation wheel planned to be built in the Cedars West neighborhood

Get ready for a new attraction to soon make a mark on the Dallas skyline. Plans for an observation wheel, that will stand more than 500 feet tall, were released on Friday.

The wheel will be called Texas Odyssey and will center a new development located in the Cedars West neighborhood.

"We see this as really a gateway to the Trinity," said project manager, David Taggart. "We want to grow with the area. We want the area to grow with us."

The group behind the plans said the wheel will stand more than 500 feet tall, which is almost as tall as reunion tower, 180 feet taller than AT&T Stadium and twice as tall as the Texas Star Ferris wheel in Fair Park.

"The views aren't too bad at ground level," said Taggart. "But when you get up to above 500 feet, the beautiful dallas skyline...360 degree views."

A new observation wheel named the Texas Odyssey is planned for the Cedars West neighborhood, South of Downtown Dallas. The wheel will be more than 500 feet tall, which is almost as tall as Reunion Tower and taller than AT&T Stadium and the Texas Star ferris wheel located inside Fair Park, Friday, May 25, 2018.

It will take 38 minutes to make your way all the way around the Texas Odyssey.

The development will include retail and dining, an outdoor performance venue and a STEAM education center. A parking garage that can hold 1,000 cars is also included in the plans.  There are also landscaping plans that will allow greater public access to the Trinity River.

"At first I was skeptical," said Michael Przekwas of the Cedars Neighborhood Association. Przekwas said he changed his mind after meeting with developers.

"Kind of a downtown Disney," Przekwas remarked. "In conjunction with the development they want to put around it...it would actually be a draw to the area."

The development will be located along the banks of the Trinity River in the Cedars West neighborhood, directly south of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

The group behind the project is hoping for city approval this year. They will then enter development stage. They hope to break ground in August of 2019. Building could take as long as two years, with hopes of a NYE opening celebration in 2022.
