5-Year-Old Shot in Dallas Drive-By

A North Texas family spent Memorial Day weekend at the hospital after a 5-year-old girl was hit by random gunfire early Saturday morning.

Police said she was sleeping in her mother's bed when she was shot at about 4:30 a.m. in the 10500 block of Blackjack Oaks Drive in Pleasant Grove.

Investigators said they believe it was a drive-by shooting. Bullets flew through both the bedroom window and the front door.

The sound was loud enough to wake neighboring residents, such as Linda Wheeler.

"It actually sounded like they were right inside my house," Wheeler said.  "I just heard rapid gunshots, and then I heard the lady screaming, and she came out with her daughter, and she said her daughter had passed away in her arms."

Dallas Police Lt. Andy Harvey said the girl survived the gunshot wounds.

"She was taken to Children's, where she had surgery this morning, and she's still in very serious condition," he said.

The victim was in serious condition Sunday afternoon.

Investigators said they have no witnesses and no suspect or vehicle descriptions to go on.

"It's going to be hard to proceed without the public's help," Harvey said.

Investigators said they hope shell casings left at the scene will lead them to the shooter.

Neighbors said they hope for justice for the girl's family.

"I just pray to God that they find whoever did it, you know, because as I was telling my family, if it that had been me, my whole world would have been turned upside down," Wheeler said.

Anyone with any information about the case is asked to call police immediately.
