Surge in COVID-19 Cases Forces School Districts to Cancel Classes

The recent surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the omicron variant, is forcing some school districts to close specific campuses or even entire districts.

Read below to see the list of changes being made by districts in North Texas.

Argyle ISD

Argyle ISD schools will be CLOSED on Friday, Jan. 14 due to staffing shortages from COVID-19 positive cases. Students & staff will return to regular schedules on Tuesday, Jan. 18 following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday.

Avalon ISD

Avalon ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Birdville ISD

Because of the District's inability to fill critical instructional and operational positions caused by COVID-19, Birdville ISD will be closed on Tuesday, January 18, and Wednesday, January 19, to help mitigate the spread of the virus. We will resume normal operations on Thursday, January 20. During this closure, no remote learning will take place. Our instructional calendar will not change at this time. At the discretion of the fine arts and athletic directors, high school extra- and co-curricular activities can continue as planned if staff are available to continue those activities. All activities involving our middle school and elementary students and staff are canceled beginning today through January 19.  

Blooming Grove ISD

Blooming Grove ISD will be closed Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14, and all scheduled after-school activities have been canceled. Classes will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Boyd ISD

Boyd ISD, in Wise County south of Decatur, said they were canceling classes beginning Wednesday through MLK Day for deep cleaning following a significant increase in COVID cases.

Campbell ISD

Campbell ISD has canceled all classes from Thursday, Jan. 13 through Friday, Jan. 21. Classes will resume Monday, Jan. 24.

Clarksville ISD

Clarksville ISD is temporarily closing two campuses: Clarksville Middle High School and Cheatham Elementary School will be closed until Thursday, Jan. 20.

Cooper ISD

Cooper ISD - only the Elementary campus will be closed Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Cranfills Gap ISD

Cranfills Gap ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Eustace ISD

Eustace ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Fairfield ISD

Fairfield ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Forney ISD

Forney ISD will close all campuses Friday, January 14, 2022. A holiday will be observed on Monday, January 17, and we will resume normal operations on Tuesday, January 18. 

Gainesville ISD

Gainesville ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Greenville ISD

Greenville ISD has canceled classes at Carver Elementary on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18. Parents can still pick up meals at the school.

Honey Grove ISD

Honey Grove ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Italy ISD

Italy ISD will be closed Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Itasca ISD 

Itasca ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Kaufman ISD

Kaufman ISD campuses will be closed to students Friday, January 14. Scheduled extracurricular activities will still take place, and teachers and staff will still report to their classrooms on campus. Classes will resume on Tuesday.

Keene ISD

Keene ISD announced Wednesday that classes would be canceled Thursday and Friday. With the MLK holiday, classes are expected to resume on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Keller ISD

Keller ISD will be closing Bear Creek Intermediate School and North Riverside Elementary School on Friday, January 14. We anticipate that those two schools will return to school in person on Tuesday, January 18, but will be closely monitoring the data and working with Keller ISD Health Services and District administrators to determine if an extension is necessary after that date. 

Kemp ISD

Kemp ISD, in Kaufman County, said they were canceling classes beginning Thursday through MLK Day for deep cleaning following a significant increase in COVID cases. At this time, extra-curricular activities will continue as scheduled.

Krum ISD

Krum ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Kerens ISD

Kerens ISD will be closed on Thursday and Friday due to over 20% of staff and students being out sick. All after-school practices and games are also canceled. Classed will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18 after the MLK holiday.

LaPoynor ISD

LaPoynor ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Malakoff ISD 

Malakoff ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Mansfield ISD

All Mansfield ISD schools and buildings will be closed Friday, Jan. 14 through Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Maypearl ISD

Maypearl ISD will close schools starting Thursday through MLK Day due to "a high level of illness ... among staff and students." UIL activities in the district are going ahead as planned, the district said.

Mesquite ISD

Mesquite ISD is closing all campuses Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 18-19 due to an overwhelming number of staff absences. The district was already closed Monday for the MLK Jr. holiday. The district will make up the days at a later date. School is expected to resume Thursday, Jan. 20.

Mexia ISD

Mexia ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Mildred ISD

Mildred ISD has been closely monitoring the spread of Covid and other seasonal illnesses such as the flu and strep. After careful consideration of the number of sick students and staff, Mildred ISD will be closed Friday, Jan.14. All extracurricular activities are suspended as well. Classes will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Mullin ISD

Mullin ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Monday, Jan. 17.

Murchison ISD

Murchison ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Northwest ISD

Northwest ISD will close all schools and buildings on Friday, Jan. 14, and Tuesday, Jan. 18. Normal school operations will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Monday, Jan. 17, is the MLK Day holiday. Palmer ISD

Palmer ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Pilot Point ISD 

Pilot Point ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Poolville ISD 

Poolville ISD will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. School will resume Monday, January 17.

Red Oak ISD

Red Oak ISD will cancel classes on Friday, Jan. 14. All staff must still report to work for an in-person staff workday, but students will have the day off. Classes will resume after the MLK holiday on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Rio Vista ISD

Rio Vista ISD canceled classes on Monday and Tuesday this week, but then extended that closure through the entire week. Classes are expected to resume after the MLK holiday on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Rivercrest ISD

All Rivercrest ISD campuses and offices will be closed Thursday, January 13th and Friday, January 14th due to a large number of student and staff illnesses. Monday was already scheduled as a holiday. Classes will resume on a regular schedule on Tuesday, January 18th.

Terrell ISD

Terrell ISD will close campuses for Friday, January 14 and Tuesday, January 18. The District was previously scheduled to be closed on Monday, January 17 due to the MLK holiday. Classes are expected to resume on Wednesday, January 19.

Trinidad ISD

Trinidad ISD will be closed Thursday through Monday and return Tuesday, January 18th. 

Venus ISD

Venus ISD announced Wednesday that classes are canceled for Thursday, Jan. 13, and Friday, Jan. 14. Extracurricular activities will be canceled for these days as well. Monday, Jan. 17 is a holiday, Martin Luther King Day). Students and staff will return to classes at normal times on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

White Settlement ISD

White Settlement ISD schools will be closed Friday, Jan. 14 through Tuesday, Jan. 18 due to staffing shortages. Classes will resume Wednesday, Jan. 19.
