Tornadoes, Large Hail Reported as Severe Storms Tracks Across North Texas

A severe storm system moving across North Texas late Sunday and early Monday produced a number of damaging tornadoes, according to reports from the National Weather Service.

At sunrise Monday the NWS began working to confirm exactly how many tornadoes touched down in North Texas Sunday night.

By Monday afternoon the NWS said it had identified eight tornadoes, including four separate tracks around the Rio Vista area, where the main supercell thunderstorm was located for several hours.

Each of the tornadoes was categorized as an EF-0, with wind speeds up to 85 mph.

Forecaster Lamont Bain said storms that began Sunday afternoon and lasted into the night didn't injure anyone or cause significant damage. He said severe weather reached Comanche, Erath, Somervell, Bosque, Hill and Johnson counties.

Bain said Glen Rose received more than 4 inches of rain.

Johnson County Emergency Management reported damage around the Rio Vista area after trained weather spotters confirmed an "extremely large wedge" tornado on the ground near Rio Vista High School late Sunday.

Hail stones about the size of softballs completely destroy the windshield of storm chasers’ car near Stephenville Sunday.

Earlier Sunday, baseball-size hail was reported near Stephenville, about 70 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Several North Texas communities have reported wind damage to trees and structures, however, there have been no reports of injuries associated with Sunday's severe storms.

Residents like Tanya Mitchell said they had to wait until daylight to see how much damage their property sustained.

"Everything can be repaired," Mitchell said. "It's just going to be a lot of trouble a lot of time, but it's just things."

Power Outages

At noon Monday, Oncor's Storm Center reports nearly 4,000 customers remain without power in Dallas (908), Ellis (1,969), Tarrant (253) and Johnson (1,173) counties, including much of Rio Vista, after the damaging storm.

There were also more than 4,500 customers without power in Angelina, Cherokee and Nacogdoches counties in East Texas.

School Delays

The Maypearl Independent School District will have a two-hour delay for buses on Tuesday, and classes will begin at 10 a.m., according to the district's Facebook page.

The Rio Vista Independent School District closed for the day Monday, according to the county sheriff.
