FLOTUS Honors Counselors, So Does Lewisville ISD

Lewisville ISD has three staffers named counselor, or counselor advocate of the year

First Lady Michelle Obama will make what are expected to be her final public remarks as First Lady on Friday morning at the 2017 School Counselor of the Year event in the East Room of the White House.

As part of her Reach Higher initiative, Mrs. Obama has championed school counselors and encouraged post-secondary education for students across the country, according to a White House news release.

From her office in Lewisville, some 1,300+ miles from the Nation's Capital, Monya Crow will be applauding the First Lady’s efforts from afar on Friday.

In her position as Director of Guidance and Counseling for the Lewisville Independent School District, Crow appreciates those who appreciate the work she and her staff do.

The Lewisville ISD employs three educators, an elementary school counselor and two administrators, whose work has been awarded as the “Best” in their respective fields, according to the Texas School Counselor Association.

Crow indicated that the recognition earned by members of the Lewisville ISD staff is a testament to their individual talents and the district’s overall dedication to helping the “whole child.”

That dedication includes operating a free, after-school counseling program, called the Family Center, for both Lewisville ISD students and members of their family.

“And that is really innovative,” Crow said. “Our counselors support that and staff that, and, so, it’s free for all the students and families to seek support if they need it, in an area that they already feel very comfortable in.”

Crow added that she is also consistently impressed with the ability of children to overcome the many, very adult problems they are faced with.

“Kids are resilient in a way that adults are not,” Crow said. “A lot of times they will go through things that would make the rest of us kind of have to sit in the corner for a minute.”
