Several Water Mains Break Near Bishop Arts District

Dallas Water Utilities crews were busy working to repair at least five broken water mains Thursday in North Oak Cliff, including near the Bishop Arts District.

The first break was at the intersection of West Davis and North Tyler streets, a second was at the intersection of West 7th Street at North Llewellyn Avenue and the other two were along West 8th Street — one near North Van Buren Avenue and the other at North Bishop Avenue.

Water was gushing several feet into the air at a fifth break, located at West Jefferson Boulevard and South Van Buren Avenue.

"There is absolutely no water," said Daniel Quintana, a homeowner who lives at 8th and Van Buren.

Quintana told NBCDFW that his water shut off around 9 a.m. Thursday and that a city utility crew showed up to start digging up the street shortly thereafter.

"Honestly it kind of makes you wonder about the infrastructure in Oak Cliff," Quintana said.

The specific cause of the series of breaks could not immediately be determined, according to a city official.

However, "heat is likely a primary factor in the breaks," according to a representative of Dallas Water Utilities. "[The breaks] could be related to expanding soils caused by heat and increased water pressure to meet demand, causing increased strain on the water supply lines."

Crews closed westbound West Davis at Tyler Thursday afternoon while they repaired the break at that location.

A nearby business, Bolsa Mercado, in the 600 block of West Davis, closed for the day due to the lack of water.
