Magnitude 2.2 Earthquake Shakes Irving Saturday

The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 2.2 earthquake at exactly 8 p.m. Saturday.

The epicenter is the southern part of Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas. That is also 3 miles north-northeast of the center of Irving at a depth of 3.1 miles.

The chance of a major earthquake in North Texas is “very remote,” according to the Dallas Office of Emergency Management.

This is the latest in a series of earthquakes. The largest was one on Jan. 6 with a magnitude of 3.5.

Three dozen earthquakes have been recorded around the old Texas Stadium site since October; no injuries or significant damage have been reported in any of the earthquakes.

Seismologists from Southern Methodist University estimate it will take an additional month of research to better understand the ancient fault line that is the source of a recent swarm of earthquakes.

A team from Southern Methodist University is studying the temblors.
