Dallas Neighborhood on Alert After Rise in Robberies

A neighborhood newsletter issued Friday night warned people living in one of Dallas' most popular areas about an apparent uptick in robberies.

There have been at least five robberies within the bounds of Lower Greenville within the last two months, according to the alert written Crime Watch representative Darren Dattalo.

That number used to represent the expected total number of robberies within the area for an entire year, according to Dattalo.

Among the victims was a good Samaritan who was flagged down late last month for a ride near the corner of Greenville Avenue and McCommas Boulevard, only to have the rider pull a gun and force the driver to an ATM for a withdrawal.

A suspect armed with a gun robbed a man in his 60s right in front of his home in the 5900 block of Oram Street, according to Dallas police reports.

Along the 3400 block of Greenville Avenue, an unknown suspect shoved a woman to the ground around 11:30 p.m. last Saturday and stole her purse.

"It's really disturbing," said Chuck Cole, the owner of The Corner Market. "I live two blocks from here, so it's disturbing for me and my family and my customers and my employees leaving at night. I'm concerned to hear about it."

The recent uptick in robberies might just be a blip, according to Dattalo, who was quick to emphasize that property crimes within the neighborhood are down compared to the previous norm.
