Along with the usual festivities of Cinco de Mayo this Saturday is a different kind of celebration, sponsored the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
Beginning at 2 p.m. at Dallas City Hall, expect to see supporters of the national movement to end the prohibition of marijuana. Cinco de Mota, aptly named for the Latin American slang for weed, will last until 10 p.m., with a march downtown beginning at 4:20 p.m.
The festivities will include an all-day party, speakers, vendors, food trucks -- presumably fully stocked with FUNYUNS® -- fire spinners, and free runners (if you aren’t sure what free running is, here’s a helpful -- and impressive -- demonstration).
The movement comes after 50,000 Mexicans have been killed in an ongoing drug war since 2006. Legalizing marijuana has long been argued by supporters as a potential economic stimulus.
The movement could also create a surge in Bob Marley and Willie Nelson album sales.
Ferris Bueller may not be atop a float singing “Danke Schoen” but there will definitely be an interesting detour to the usual Cinco de Mayo celebrations on Saturday.
