Cardboard Regatta Sets Sail Saturday

Sink or swim, swine flu be damned, the 20th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta in Arlington set sail Saturday.

More than 100 amateur boat builders will take to the seas at Six Flags' Hurricane Harbor (lazy river and wave pool) for a series of races and competitions.  At the end of the day, a durability test will see which cardboard vessels can take the unrelenting pounding of water from the park's wave pool.

Prizes will be given to the crews, youths, adults and corporations alike.  There are, of course, prizes for the winners but also for those who sink.

Other event-day activities include a children's area, cardboard boat building, volleyball and tug-of-war tournaments.

Event organizers said hand sanitization stations will be set up at the event -- for those worried about the spread of germs.

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. and general admission is $5.  For $10, attendees can also ride the park's Tornado all day long.  The event is scheduled to last until 4 p.m.

All proceeds benefit Arlington's River Legacy Foundation.
