With Week 9 kicking off tonight, there are many big games on the schedule that will leave options wide open for area high school football fans.
As usual, I'll break down a few of the area's top games today, then discuss the game of the week on Friday.
Hebron at Southlake Carroll, 7:30 p.m., Friday -- Hebron is 1-2 in district play after a big win over the 6-5A cellar dwellar Lewisville last week, it's first district win. Now, the Hawks get to travel to the hostile confines of Southlake's Dragon Stadium to play the hot Dragons, which haven't lost since a nondistrict game against Galena Park North Shore. The Dragons are ranked ninth in the state and are getting great play from QB David Piland and RB Tommy Avers, who both had big games in last week's 70-21 rout of Flower Mound. Prediction: Carroll 38, Hebron 17.
Flower Mound Marcus vs. Flower Mound, 8 p.m., Friday -- These teams will meet at the dump otherwise known as Fouts Field on the campus of UNT after playing in previous years at Texas Stadium. Flower Mound is a game up on Marcus for second place in the district behind its high flying passing attack and QB Paul Millard, who eclipsed 500 yards passing in last week's blowout loss to Carroll. Marcus runs the complete opposite when it comes to offense behind smashmouth workhorse RB Stephen Hopkins. The Marauders are coming off a loss to Coppell a week ago. I think Marcus wins with ball control and defense. Prediction: Marcus 27, Flower Mound 21.
Richardson vs. Richardson Berkner, 7:30 p.m., Friday -- These two teams are in the thick of a three-way tie for third place in District 9-5A and Friday's game will all but decide the positioning. This game will be a good ol' fashioned slugfest between two strong defenses. Richardson has surprised some folks this year after being one of the worst teams in the area recently, but the two teams have combined to pitch five shutouts (Richardson has three, Berkner has two). Prediction: Berkner 17, Richardson 7.
Last week's record: 2-2. Season record: 21-14.
