When you talk about the best bullpens in baseball, the Texas Rangers have to be right up at the top of the conversation, along with teams like the Royals and now the Yankees after they traded for Aroldis Chapman.
New Rangers pitching coach Doug Brocail is starting to see the benefit of that depth in the preliminary workouts the team is having in Arlington before they head to Arizona for spring training next month, and he couldn't be happier.
While speaking with Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News on the paper's baseball podcast, Brocail raved about his new team's bullpen depth that features two players who have closed games regularly at the big-league level in Shawn Tolleson and Tom Wilhelmsen, a setup man who's seen by many as the best closer candidate in Sam Dyson and two electric arms in Keone Kela and Jake Diekman, not to mention some reclamation projects like Tanner Scheppers.
The depth is insane, and Brocail has taken notice.
"We're meeting again in a few weeks to go over some things," Brocail told the podcast. "Just looking at it — if it's not broke, don't fix it. That's pretty much my philosophy when you're looking at things for the future. I'm coming into this very happy. I sat down with the guys, talked to them about it, I've seen a ton of video — we have five guys in that bullpen that can close for crying out loud — so, if something was to happen, we'll be OK."
