JJT: Randy Gregory is Back, Bo Scarbrough Adjusting to NFL and Byron Jones Starts Strong

Here are five highlights from coach Jason Garrett’s daily news conference:

1.

The Cowboys removed defensive end Randy Gregory from the Non-Football Injury list and added him to their roster on Wednesday, which meant he was available to practice.

Gregory, who’s been at every practice since training camp began, participated in a walk-through practice for the first time. He’s missed much of the last two seasons for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

“He’s doing very well. He’s making progress,” Garrett said. “He continues to build day-by-day.

“We’re going to progress deliberately, and start to get him some work. We’re just going to watch him and see if he can handle the work and the different things we’re going to ask him to do. At some point, hopefully, we’ll see him in the preseason.”

Gregory worked with the first, second and third teams during the walk-through.

2.

The Cowboys are being careful with linebacker Sean Lee, Tyron Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence.

They’re making sure their bodies aren’t worn down during training camp.

Lee strained a hamstring in training camp last year and it was never right the entire year.

Twice, he missed games with a hamstring injury. Lee missed five games, and has never played a 16-game season.

“Sometimes, we have to protect him from himself so that’s a little bit about what this is all about,” Garrett said of Lee.

“He’ll start to practice on a more

regular basis as we get going a little bit

More. Suffice it to say we’re doing everything we can to get him ready to play in Week 1.”

3.

Bo Scarbrough, a seventh-round pick, is making a smooth adjustment to the NFL.

“Bo was highly-regarded coming out of high school and he did some really great things at different times in his career at Alabama,” Garrett said. “We just felt like he had a chance to come in and compete for one of those running back spots.

“I talked to coach (Nick) Saban about him and he endorsed him quite highly as a person and a player and that means a lot to us.”

Still, Scarbrough will have have a difficult time making the team unless he can perform at a high level on special teams.

4.

Byron Jones is having a good start to training camp.

He’s making plays and it seems like passing game coordinator Kris Richard has revitalized his career.

“He played corner in college for a couple of years and he played safety for a couple of years,” Garrett said. “We put him in situations where he was covering so this isn’t new to him and he’s done a good job adjusting to what we’re doing on the back end.”
