Brewers Make Contract Offer to Yu Darvish

The pursuit continues with a new interesting twist.

Yu Darvish is a free agent pitcher without a team at the moment. However, there is interest in the righty. The Rangers have entertained the idea of a reunion if the money is right. The New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins have had their names recently linked to Darvish.

Now there is a new team in the fold. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Milwaukee Brewers.

It’s true.

The Brewers have made an official contract offer.  Yahoo Japan first had the report. Darvish linked to the story on Twitter. Either the troll game is strong or there’s something to this.

Word is at least one team has a five-year offer on the team. Could it be the Brewers? Maybe one of the previously mention teams above? That still remains a mystery.

The Brewers were a surprise contender in the National League Central last season. Here’s where things get interesting. Apparently payroll flexibility is not an issue for the Brew Crew. Outfielder Ryan Braun has three seasons left of his five-year, $105 million contract extension with $57 million left to be paid. However, some of that money is being deferred. There’s room available.

They also need a replacement for their No. 1 starter, Jimmy Nelson. The big righty is expected to miss at least a portion of the first half of the season due to shoulder surgery. The Brewers have been actively looking for a front-line starter during the offseason so this is starting to make some sense.

The popular feeling is that the Cubs are the current leaders in the clubhouse for the services of Darvish. However, the Twins also have some payroll flexibility working in their favor. Friendly reminder, Twins general manager Thad Levine was with the Rangers when Darvish took the mound in Arlington before being sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers at last season’s trade deadline.

Now, as far as that reunion in Texas, GM Jon Daniels hinted that if the team was going to spend some money, it might be on the pitching side. However, he once again downplayed the possibility of any major move.

Might want to hold off on those “reunited and it feels so good” shirts if you’re a Rangers fan.
