Granbury's Dana Vollmer is the first from North Texas to win gold at the 2012 London Games.
Vollmer took first in the women's 100m fly Sunday and set a new world record at the same time with a swim of 55.98. Vollmer is the first woman to break the 56 second barrier.
She shaved .08 seconds off the World Record, a time set by Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom at the 2009 world championships in Rome.
Sjostrom finished fourth in this race behind Vollmer, Ying Lu (2nd) and Australia's Alicia Coutts (3rd). Team USA's Claire Donahue finished 7th.
That swim wasn't the first record-setting swim of these Olympics for Vollmer, who also set an Olympic record with her swim in the preliminary round of the same event.
Vollmer, whose didn't make Team USA for the 2008 Beijing Games, first competed in the Olympics in Athens in 2004. She is now considered to be the top women's 100m fly swimmer on Team USA.
Vollmer will also be competing in the women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay, which begins Aug. 1. She is currently slated to race in the second heat.
