Transgender People Included in New Ordinance

Change comes after Rainbow Lounge raid.

Transgender people will be included in Fort Worth's anti-discrimination ordinance.

The city council, in a session attended by more than 200 people, voted Tuesday to expand the ordinance.

A June raid at a Fort Worth gay bar, the Rainbow Lounge, left a customer with head wounds and sparked protests by the gay community. A task force was later appointed to try to improve the city's relations with gays.

Fort Worth's ordinance already barred discrimination based on race, sex, religion or sexual orientation.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the city's human relations commission was working on transgender issues before the Rainbow Lounge incident.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and Fort Worth police last week announced internal investigations found no evidence of excessive force in the raid, but some policies will be changed.
