South Texas Councilman Charged in Human Smuggling Case

A South Texas city councilman has been arrested on human smuggling charges for allegedly trying to transport three immigrants to San Antonio.

Marco Antonio Rodriguez of Crystal City faces a federal detention hearing Thursday in Del Rio.

Rodriguez serves on the council in Crystal City, a town of about 7,000 located 100 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Prosecutors say Rodriguez was arrested Saturday in Big Wells when he drove a truck, with three passengers, to a post office parking lot. Border Patrol agents confronted Rodriguez and detained the passengers allegedly in the U.S. illegally.

A criminal complaint says Rodriguez told agents he was being paid to drive immigrants to San Antonio.

An attorney for Rodriguez didn't immediately return a message for comment Wednesday. Crystal City officials also didn't immediately comment.
