SMU Closes Campus Buildings for Sewer Line Repairs

Residential commons, dining hall among closures for needed repairs

Southern Methodist University students were evacuated from a dormitory and other buildings Wednesday because of a sewer line break.

Students at the Virginia-Snider Commons dormitory first noticed there was a problem when they turned on faucets and smelled sewage.

"We assumed the workers outside had broken a sewage line," SMU freshman Kennedy Farris said.

Students received an email from the school with a 90-minute warning to vacate the dorm.

"To have them yank us up from where we live with a couple hours notice max, it's a little irritating," sophomore Ian Zane said. "We're a little peeved. Me and my roommate, we're not the happiest."

SMU officials made living arrangements for students who live in the dorm. They said about 40 students were accommodated with area hotel rooms and transportation to campus while about 200 others stayed with family and friends.

"I'm definitely going to try and get in a hotel tonight," Zane said. "They definitely weren't clear yesterday about what the arrangements were."

Repairs were expected to continue into Friday, so university officials said they would make similar arrangements for students Thursday night that would include either on-campus or off-campus lodging.

The closure also included the Umphrey Lee Center, the university said in a statement.

"It's a bit of a bummer," SMU freshman Ruth Kolkman said. "It's just another adventure we can add to our freshman year."

Campus officials reopened the Umphrey Lee Center in time for regularly scheduled classes Thursday, though the dining hall remained closed.
