Senator Ted Cruz on the First Weeks of New Administration

Sen. Ted Cruz spoke to the Southwest Agriculture Issues Summit in Fort Worth on Monday, the day after he went to the Super Bowl in his hometown of Houston.

“I watched part of the game with Mike Pence, and I have to admit it is the first time I have ever been with the vice president to a Lady Gaga concert,” said Cruz, who got a big laugh from the audience.

But the senator got very serious when it came to the first few weeks of the new administration.

“The first couple of weeks I have been thrilled with how things have gone so far,” said Cruz. “We have been given an opportunity to do something extraordinary. It has been very rare in history that Republicans have been entrusted with control of the White House, control of every executive agency, control of both houses in Congress. In my view, that opportunity means we have to stand up and deliver.”

Sen. Ted Cruz addresses issues important to the Texas agriculture industry and policy priorities for the 115th Congress in Fort Worth Monday morning.

After a contentious primary between Cruz and President Donald Trump, the two seem to be working together.

“It is not exactly a state secret that my relationship with Donald Trump has been up and down. But the week after the election, I flew up to New York, went to Trump Tower, sat down, with the president and I said, 'we have been given an historic opportunity and I want to do everything humanely possible to help lead the fight to get it done. We have been talking about this stuff too long. Let’s get it accomplished.' And so right now my office is talking with the president and the new administration everyday, sometimes as often as every hour,” he added.

Cruz came to North Texas during a very busy few weeks for Trump. Trump issued an executive order on refugees, which has been challenged in the courts.

“This is a common sense step, and what the president has said is we are going to put a four month pause on refugees, so we can develop rigorous vetting techniques so we can be certain we are not letting terrorists into this country,” said Cruz.

Last week, Cruz met with Supreme Court Justice nominee, Neil Gorsuch.

“I am excited about this nomination. I think it is an important nomination, and I believe Judge Gorsuch will be confirmed in the United States Senate,” he added.
