Pope's Frugal Fiat Turns Heads on First U.S. Visit

The mode of transportation chosen by Pope Francis to drive him around on his first trip to the United States is turning heads.

"I'm just so excited that we can be selling the Popemobile!" said Amanda George, general manager of Alfa Romeo Fiat of Dallas.

The dealership is already hearing from potential customers inspired by the frugal Pope's choice – a black Fiat 500L four door, with a base price of $21,695.

"Not a lot of people know what it is," said George. "So we're getting a lot of 'What is that? Is it a Fiat? I think it's a Fiat. What kind of car? What can you tell me about it?'"

There is a Popemobile built from a Jeep Wrangler for public processions during the Pope's visit, but the Pope chose the Fiat to get him around Washington D.C., New York City and Philadelphia.

"It's spacious. I love it," said Mia Anderson, of Dallas, who drives the same car.

"It makes me feel like he's just normal just like us, he's no different," said Anderson. "And I actually feel good about that."

The 500L is the largest Fiat sold in the United States and is rated at 22 miles per gallon in the city.
