POP Tennis Grows in Popularity in North Texas

A new spin on tennis is taking the country by storm and fans of POP Tennis think North Texas is the perfect place to expand the sport's popularity.

POP Tennis is still tennis – except it's played on a smaller court with large paddles instead of racquets, and the balls in this game are supposed to be a little deflated.

It doesn't take long to figure out why they call it POP Tennis.

"It's a really addictive sport," said player Austin Doerner.

A traditional tennis player growing up, Doerner discovered POP Tennis in Venice Beach, Calif., where the sport first exploded.

Now, he and other professionals travel around the country, working to get the game popping in new cities.

"I think a lot of people don't know about it, and then when they hear about it, they're like, 'What is this? I'd like to try it,'" Doerner said.

"You have to rely on touch, feel, good technique, all that kind of stuff," said player Austin Soliz.

The pros say it doesn't take long to catch on, whether you're winning national tournaments like them or you've never picked up a racquet. But that's not to say the game doesn't get intense or lacks excitement.

Which is why they think it could be a real hit in Texas.

Walnut Creek Country Club has already hosted a few POP Tennis events, and they say the response has been great.
