North Texas Charity Shipping Disaster Aid to Haiti

At the Texas Baptist Men's Dallas warehouse, volunteers were busy Tuesday packing Hurricane Matthew disaster relief supplies bound for Haiti.

"A lot of times these people in different countries think that they're alone," said Texas Baptist Men executive director Mickey Lenamon. "It shows people care about them."

The planning began before the hurricane hit on Tuesday. The first shipment for Haiti will go out on Wednesday.

"So we put the word out to our people, our churches, and they're real good about responding," Lenamon explained.

Texas Baptist Men's charity runs entirely on donations. The organization's budget is $2 million a year.

Donations bound for Haiti include infant formula, lights and simple water filtration systems.

"This filters out every impurity from the cholera," explained Lenamon. "And gives them clean drinking water, just like we receive in a bottle here in the states."

The charity is in a holding pattern, waiting to see what path Hurricane Matthew will take, and if that path will impact the U.S. If so, Texas Baptist Men has 18-wheelers with a mobile kitchen inside them that can cook up to 20,000 meals a day.

"The people we deal with want to help," Lenamon said. "They want to give their money, they want to give their time, and they also want to go and help as well."
