Nearly 4 Tons of Marijuana Seized in South Texas

Abandoned drug vehicles lead to big scores

Border Patrol agents in South Texas have seized nearly 4 tons of marijuana over Memorial Day weekend in several incidents.

Investigators say two drug-hauling vehicles that were abandoned helped lead to more than $6.3 million worth of marijuana confiscated.

The largest seizure happened Friday night near La Casitas. Agents saw a truck being loaded with marijuana on the banks of the Rio Grande. The driver jumped out as agents intercepted the fleeing vehicle.

The Border Patrol said Tuesday that agents recovered more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana in that case.

Another large seizure Friday near La Casita involved a chase and an SUV abandoned along the Rio Grande as two people who were in the vehicle swam to Mexico. Officers confiscated about 1,200 pounds of marijuana.
