National Guard Distributes Water in Garland

Ten days without running water is almost unfathomable for most of us. But that’s exactly what many of our neighbors have endured.

Garland residents received much-needed relief in the form of water this week as the National Guard distributed bottled water in the community.

As of Thursday, roughly 111,000 bottles had been distributed both at the library and to Garland apartment complexes that have been without water service due to the winter storm.

Texas Sky Ranger flew over some of the sites Friday where water was being loaded into National Guard vehicles.

The National Guard made several stops at locations where people had already reached the end of their ropes. Rachel Long said washing dishes and flushing the toilet had become burdensome. To shower, she’d been using her local gym or relying on friends.

"I live right here on Bass Pro. My gym is in Rockwall. My friends are in Mesquite," she said.

Heather Coleson with the City of Garland’s library system said the Guard stepped in to help because volunteers were simply stretched thin.

"It’s just been a rough time. And we’ve been doing this since last Friday, giving out water," said Coleson. "We’re going to keep handed out water as long as they need it."
