Irving Trustee Charged with Shoplifting Quits

An Irving school board member has quit after being accused of shoplifting.

Irving Independent School District officials on Monday said Norma Gonzales verbally resigned.

Gonzales was arrested Saturday after leaving a Wal-Mart where a worker alleged Gonzales walked out with more than $180 worth of clothing and other items. Irving police have said the items were stuffed into the woman's purse.

Gonzales, who was unopposed when she was elected this year, was charged with misdemeanor theft under $500 and was freed on bond. She didn't immediately return a message for comment Tuesday.

School board officials will decide how to fill the vacancy.
