Fort Worth City Councilman Brian Byrd is creating a task force to address a host of problems along Las Vegas Trail, a mile-long stretch of road in West Fort Worth.
"There's a multitude of problems," said community activist Bob Ray Sanders.
Low-income apartments line the four-lane street, and Fort Worth police are often spotted there responding to a long list of crimes.
"There's child abuse at an ungodly level," Sanders said. "There's kids who are surrounded by drug-infested apartments, the kids who come to school, and they have all these challenges because they bring them from home."
Hundreds of people packed a neighborhood meeting Wednesday night at Western Hills Primary School, sharing their concerns and looking for solutions.
"We want to see this whole area transformed," said Byrd, who represents the area. "We need to go from low-performing education to high-performing education. We need to go from higher crime to lower crime. We need to go from low employment to higher employment."
Byrd is now working on putting together a task force with representatives from the community, police and educators, among others.
