FC Dallas defender Ryan Hollingshead is at home recovering after he was hit by a car in Irving Friday evening.
Hollingshead was helping a driver who had crashed when another driver struck him, according to a team news release.
Icy road conditions contributed to the crash, the team said.
Hollingshead suffered fractures to three cervical vertebrae and will be in a neck brace for six to eight weeks. He spent about two days in the hospital before he was discharged Sunday night.
FC Dallas' season opener is March 4 against LA Galaxy.
