Denton County Prioritizes Safety on Lewisville Lake

No major incidents reported on lake this holiday weekend

Denton County law enforcement agencies kept a close eye on Lewisville Lake during the holiday weekend.

Extra patrols were on the lake to help prevent injuries and drownings.

The sheriff's department instituted a zero-refusal policy for intoxicated driving tests to cut down on drunken boating and driving. Local police from across the county were also posted at hot spots around the lake to remind people to play it safe.

In the past, Lewisville Lake has gained a reputation among many as a dangerous lake, especially during the holidays, because of several injuries and even some drowning deaths.

Several folks at a beach near Hickory Creek said they believe it has to do with partying and drinking on the lake, saying they do not plan to make those mistakes.

"The guys who are driving the boats are pretty good about not drinking," Amy Whalen said. "They always make sure we're safe there."

"Everyone's being pretty responsible," jet skier Brett Ellsworth said. "It seems safe and fun out there."

Officers expect to see some beer cans while on patrol but people overall seem to be respecting each other and the safety policies on the lake this year, a Highland Village officer said.

As of Monday evening, no serious injuries had been reported on the lake.

Officers responded to several incidents Monday, including one that required an ambulance, but officials said the worst incidents only dealt with minor medical issues at the worst.

The county also increased enforcement on Lake Ray Roberts in Pilot Point for the weekend.
