Dallas ISD Considers Re-Zoning Elementary Schools

Students attending one of the Dallas Independent School District's most successful schools could be heading somewhere else next year.

A proposal to change attendance boundaries affects three schools: Hogg Elementary, Reagan Elementary and Rosemont Elementary.

Attendance zone changes are being considered to more effectively distribute student population and relieve overcrowding within the Sunset High School feeder pattern, officials said.

According to the Dallas ISD Attendance Boundary Advisory Committee, the area within Cedar Hill Avenue, West Canty Street, Haines Avenue and West Davis Street would move from Rosemont Elementary to Hogg Elementary. The area within North Polk Street, West Davis Street, North Vernon Avenue and West 12th Street would move from Rosemont Elementary to Reagan Elementary.

"It just doesn't make sense to me that they wouldn't geographically change the boundaries," said Trina Ochoa, a mother of two students at Rosemont. "The kids that are closest to the schools go to those schools."

At a community meeting Wednesday hosted at Rosemont's Chris V. Semos Campus, the Dallas ISD Attendance Boundary Advisory Committee presented enrollment numbers at the three schools.

Rosemont Elementary currently has 689 students enrolled, while 587 is considered capacity. The proposed boundary change will get the enrollment number down to 639.

At Hogg Elementary, 287 students are enrolled and 431 is capacity. The boundary change would get the enrollment to 315.

The enrollment at Reagan Elementary is 412 students, while 483 is capacity. The boundary change will get enrollment to 100-percent capacity.

"They won't have the same education and they won't have the same opportunities," said Cody Seuss, who also has two children enrolled at Rosemont. "Pulling my kids out of the school is not only going to be tough on us. It will be tough on her."

The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees will vote on the recommended boundary changes on Jan. 28.
