American Airlines Vows to Fix Problems Vexing its Passengers

American's biggest challenges have been a work slowdown by mechanics and the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX jets

The president of American Airlines is promising to get things right after admitting his company has disappointed its passengers this year with performance that has included many delayed and canceled flights.

Robert Isom said Wednesday that American's biggest challenges this summer have been a work slowdown by mechanics and the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX jet.

Isom said the airline will get a labor deal to end the strife with mechanics, and the Boeing MAX will fly again -- although he didn't give a specific date for the return of the grounded plane.

Isom was speaking to investors on the same day that American was flying its last MD-80s jets into retirement in the New Mexico desert. The old planes are a symbol of better days at American.
