Abbott Discusses Transition to Texas Governorship

Gov.-elect Greg Abbott revealed plans for his transition into his new job including the appointment of his next Texas Secretary of State.

Abbott appointed Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos to the position.

Abbott touted Cascos' leadership experience and said he understands how government works and can cultivate strong bonds along and across the border as well as advance the state's interests abroad.

Cascos will replace Nandita Berry, who was appointed by Perry appointed a year ago.

The Republican attorney general's Tuesday news conference at the Capitol is the second of its kind in the week since he bested his Democratic opponent, state Sen. Wendy Davis, in the midterm elections.

On Monday, Abbott met with Texas Department of Transportation officials to discuss top infrastructure priorities heading into the legislative session convening in January.

Abbott has promised to increased state spending on key transportation projects he says are vital to keeping Texas competitive in the business world.

Abbott takes office Jan. 20.

The longest-serving governor in state history, Gov. Rick Perry, didn't seek re-election but may run again for president in 2016. His 2012 White House bid fizzled.
