Tickets Piling Up for Illegal Parking in Uptown Dallas

People living in Uptown Dallas are having a tough time finding a place to park.

A week after the partial collapse of the parking garage at the Renaissance on Turtle Creek, Dallas police are now cracking down on people parking illegally nearby.

"People were able to park in illegal spots, (and) there's a lot across the street that everyone was able to use," said Renaissance resident Holland Finley. "But in the last couple of days they've cracked down so I anticipate in the next couple of days will be really, really difficult."

The crackdown started at noon Saturday, a day after Dallas police notified building managers.

Many people now leave work early to find a legal parking space.

"We're desperate to park somewhere, we have nowhere to go," said Renaissance resident Richard Willemin.

Dallas police call it a safety issue and note they issued more than 200 courtesy citations last week before starting to write actual tickets. Some of the tickets include a $45 fine.

Now, the parking tickets are starting to pile up, and some people say police are going too far.

"Look how far away that sign is from that corner, and they were ticketing cars that were one tire past it," said Renaissance resident David Boice.

Building management is still working on finding another garage while repairs are made to the parking garage at the Renaissance, and the city said there are empty lots nearby that people living there could use to park.
