More Than 40 Cases of Swine Flu Confirmed in Texas

With four confirmed cases, Cleburne closes school until May 11

The Texas Department of State Health Services said Sunday there are more than 40 confirmed cases of swine flu in the state, including five residents of Mexico.

The health department said 43 cases have been confirmed. However, the numbers did not include three cases in Tarrant County that were confirmed as of Saturday night, which brings Texas' total to 46 confirmed cases.

The CDC said Sunday that more than 200 cases have been confirmed throughout the United States.

The Cleburne Independent School District announced all of its campuses would remain closed this week. The Texas Department of State Health Services said Saturday that four Cleburne High School students were confirmed to have swine flu.

Cleburne ISD schools are expected to reopen May 11.

In addition, the Crowley Independent School District has closed Dallas Park Elementary through Friday.

In Collin County, the Plano Independent School District closed Barron Early Childhood School and Sigler Elementary School. Both campuses should reopen on May 18, the district said. The district said Wilson Middle School is also expected to reopen on May 18, rather than May 11, as was previously announced.

A toddler from Mexico City who died at a Houston hospital was the first swine flu death in the United States.

The swine flu outbreak has led to the closure of hundreds of schools in Texas, affecting about 350,000 students.
