Texas Panhandle Wildfire Blamed in Death of Man

Authorities say a wildfire in the Texas Panhandle that's destroyed 156 structures now is being blamed for the death of one person.

Texas A&M Forest Service spokesman Troy Duchneaux said Tuesday a man found dead in his home Sunday died of a heart attack that's attributable to the wildfire.

Meanwhile, residents needing their medication or to retrieve pets from inside their homes were being escorted by sheriff's deputies.

Teams of emergency officials will comb a 4-square-mile area to assess the damage and search for potential victims.

Duchneaux says crews will mount a door-to-door search Tuesday of the area around Lake Meredith about 30 miles northeast of Amarillo.

Forest Service officials say the fire that started Sunday near Fritch was 75 percent contained Tuesday. About 2,100 people were forced to evacuate.
